Internet Access at H20

I’m wondering why the internet access in the H20 building is intermittent at best.  I understand Boutique Apartments is doing us a great service by providing free internet access, but it seems to constantly go down, the router (modem) needing to be power-cycled constantly.

It usually goes down when there are a lot of people connected.  I’ve talked with the owner and he says the DSL comes into the router then into a switch.  It seems, then, that when a lot of people are on, the switch (or router) becomes overloaded and doesn’t have enough IP addresses available for the entire complex.  There are only so many handed out via DHCP.

I don’t know if anyone else in H20 notices this, but it is kind of annoying if you do a lot of your work online, only to be kicked off and have to wait for the manager to access the router.

I’ve set up many networks for companies and schools and it seems we either need another switch or another DSL line serving H20 so it doesn’t become overloaded.  Perhaps a tenant at H20 could be trusted to monitor the network and resolve problems when they come up instead of waiting for the manager.  Also, if needed, I have a 6 port gigabyte switch sitting unused I would gladly donate to H20 if it would fix the internet problem.

Just some suggestions.
